What to Eat in the 8th Month of Pregnancy

By the 8th month of pregnancy, the best plan is simple: small meals, lots of iron, protein, calcium and a bit of DHA. Big plates just don’t work anymore. Your baby has taken over most of the space in there.

Why You’re Full After Three Bites

You sit down to dinner, eat half of it, and suddenly you’re done. Sound familiar? That’s normal. Your uterus is pushing up against your stomach, so there’s barely any room left for food.

Here’s the funny part. You still need more fuel than before. ACOG puts it at around 450 extra calories a day in the third trimester. That’s about a peanut butter sandwich and a glass of milk. So you don’t need to eat for two, just a little smarter for one and a half.

The Foods Worth Reaching For

Iron comes first, in my book. Your blood volume is at its highest right now, and the NIH recommends 27 mg a day. Lentils, spinach, chickpeas and lean meat all do the job. Squeeze some lemon over your dal or salad, because vitamin C helps your body soak up the iron.

Protein and calcium matter too, since your baby’s bones are hardening these weeks. A cup of yogurt, a boiled egg, some cheese, a handful of almonds. Nothing fancy. If you skip calcium, your body quietly takes it from your own bones, which nobody wants.

Then there’s DHA for pregnancy, the omega-3 that supports your baby’s brain and eyes. Salmon and sardines are the classic sources, and walnuts help a little. The FDA suggests 8 to 12 ounces of low-mercury fish a week. Not a fish person? Chat with your doctor about a pregnancy supplement instead.

And water. Lots of it. Add oats and fruit for fiber, because constipation gets stubborn this late.

What to Skip (and the Heartburn Problem)

According to the CDC, raw or undercooked meat, eggs and fish are out, and so are unpasteurized milk and soft cheeses. Listeria is rare, but it’s serious in pregnancy, so it’s not worth the gamble.

Heartburn is the other big complaint this month. What helps most women is eating five or six mini-meals instead of three big ones, and finishing dinner at least two hours before bed. Spicy and fried food usually make it worse.

Oh, and keep taking your prenatal vitamin. Folic acid and iron still count, even now. Your doctor can tell you what suits you best.

Quick Questions Moms Ask

How many extra calories do I need in month 8?

Around 450 a day for most women. It changes a bit with your weight and activity.

Are dates okay to eat?

Usually, in small amounts. A few studies link them to easier labor, but the evidence is thin. Ask your provider first, especially with gestational diabetes.

What causes heartburn in late pregnancy?

Big meals, spicy food, fried food and acidic things like tomato sauce.

Do I still need prenatal vitamins now?

Yes. NIH and ACOG both say to keep taking them until delivery.
