Pregnancy Meal Plan for Swelling and Constipation

Pregnancy Meal Plan for Swelling and Constipation: Foods That Help
Pregnancy Meal Plan for Swelling and Constipation

Okay so, feet like pillows and a stomach that’s gone quiet for days. Nobody warns you about this combo. The pregnancy meal plan for swelling and constipation that works for most women is pretty plain: fiber at every meal, water all day, a banana or two, and a break from salty snacks.

The reason they hit together is hormones, mostly. Progesterone loosens up the gut muscles, so everything slows down. Your body also stores extra fluid for the baby, and that fluid settles in your legs by evening. ACOG calls mild swelling normal. NIH warns that iron tablets can make the constipation worse, so if things got bad right after you started them, well, there’s your answer.

A day of food that doesn’t feel like a diet

Water first thing. Then oats with banana sliced in, or a salty daliya if sweet breakfast makes you queasy. Bananas carry potassium, and that helps your body let go of fluid.

Lunch could be plain dal and a roti made with whole wheat atta, with cucumber on the side. If you’re starving around four (everybody is), eat an apple with the skin, or a few soaked almonds, or a pear. Dinner? Moong khichdi with curd is easy on the stomach. Chicken and sabzi works. A baked sweet potato, if you can’t be bothered to cook anything.

Most doctors suggest 25 to 30 grams of fiber a day. That number scared me the first time I saw it, but a bowl of lentils, a fruit or two and a roti or two gets you most of the way.

And salt. Chips, achaar, Maggi, namkeen, all the good stuff. You needn’t give them up, just don’t eat them every single day.

Stuff worth knowing

Add fiber slowly. Seriously. Jumping from nothing to a mountain of lentils will leave you bloated and cranky. And drink water, because fiber without it can actually block you up more. The funny part is that drinking more water reduces swelling, which sounds backwards but isn’t. Coconut water counts.

A short walk after dinner helps if you’ve got the energy. Then lie down with your feet on a pillow. Don’t try isabgol, laxatives or herbal teas on your own, since some of them aren’t safe during pregnancy. Ask your doctor.

When swelling is a warning sign

A sudden puffy face or hands, bad headache, or blurry vision should be checked the same day. The CDC lists these as possible signs of preeclampsia. One leg swollen and painful, call your doctor for that too.
